A note from this years winner Brian Barber of North Vancouver:

Thank you Mark and Kathryn at 5Peaks and thank you Brent McCorquodale at Great Northern! As a rabid fan of the steep and deep, I was ecstatic when selected as winner of the 3 day prize. I have just returned from Great Northern and I can report to all trail running powder skiers out there that the experience was fabulous. First off, the lodge has all the amenities and a fun, friendly and hard-working staff. The Lodge is very comfortable and has all the amenities for relaxing after a hard day of floating through knee deep powder. Meals are delicious and a blend of home cooking and fine dining. You will definitely not go hungry! For those with leftover energy the ping pong table and pool table offer up opportunities for great battles. There is a TV room and quiet areas for reading as well.

The main event, however, is the deep, light interior powder laying thick and fluffy on fantastic terrain. Knee deep pow was offered up for every run. We never crossed old tracks. Snow and weather conditions required we stay on the mid and lower mountain slopes but the glades, ridges, tree skiing and open aspects between the trees offered great variety. I can only imagine skiing the upper slopes and areas not yet opened with snow roads. The only bad part of the trip was leaving all that behind at the end of day 3. For any powder hounds out there I would highly recommend Great Northern Cat-skiing; check them out at www.greatnorthernsnowcat.com. I will definitely be heading back soon. See you all soon at the upcoming 5Peaks event at Golden Ears !

New Awards & Prizing

Check this out! With all the new sponsors this year we have even more great prizes to give away! All runners are eligible for over $50,000 worth of prizes throughout the series, through random draws, top place finishers or Series Championships. Make sure you race as many times as possible so you can capitalize on all the great gear we have lined up this year!!!...Remember you have to be there to win! Similar to previous years though, we’ll also be giving away awards and prizes to the top 3 finishers in each distance at each race.

We’ll also be tabulating points for the top 15 finishers in each race, and each age category with points contributing towards to the Series Championships. The more points you have at the end of the year, the better. We’ll be awarding Salomon sponsored gear to the top 3 Overall Series Champions in both Sport and Enduro courses.

After much discussion and input from racers, we’ve made some changes to the Age Group Champions awards and their presentation. We’ll have a combination of gift certificates, and limited edition 5 Peaks plaques/trophies for the top three in each age group. We promise that the awards ceremony will run much more smoothly and all winners will be recognized on the podium.

NEW this year ~ Awards Barbeque!

This season, at the last races of the season in each region, while we're busy tabulating final championship results and awards, we'll be offering racers something to do! Included in your entry fee for the last race of the season is a terrific post race barbeque. The awards ceremony is always a lot of fun. This year, in addition to getting voted "Canada's Best Running Series", we're going for "Best After Party" too! Join us in the festivities!

New Charity Partner

Currently, less than 10% of Canada's wilderness is protected. That's why MEC and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) founded The Big Wild initiative. They want to mobilize Canadians to demonstrate support for the protection of Canada's publicly-owned wilderness. The vision of the movement is that Canada will protect at least half of our wilderness from industrial development. Donations to The Big Wild are deposited into a charitable fund established to support wilderness conservation campaigns. (Charitable donation receipts will be issued for all donations over $50.00). We want to ensure that at least half of Canada's lands and waters remain permanently wild. For more information please visit www.thebigwild.org
